Rosemary: 5 Health Benefits & Medicinal Properties

Updated: Apr 12, 2021

Salvia rosarminus, commonly called Rosemary, is a woody, fragrant, perennial herb. One of my favorite herbs here at the cottage in fact!

Rosemary is a magical herb and is actually a member of the mint family. Although she tastes nothing like mint!

I am going to cover the following Rosemary info in this post:

  1. DIY Rosemary Shampoo Recipe

  2. Rosemary Essential Properties

  3. Rosemary Medicinal Properties

  4. Rosemary Magical Properties

  5. Benefits of Rosemary Tea for Good Health

Not only can rosemary be used in many recipes, like those found in my cookbook, she can also be burned as an incense, used in DIY natural cleaning products, and DIY organic skin care and shampoos too.

When I don't have time to make my own rosemary shampoo, I use Avalon Organics Shampoo. It not only smells great but I double it as a body wash too.

If you want to try your hand at making your own Rosemary Shampoo, try this DIY recipe at home that's free of toxic chemicals:

1. DIY Rosemary Shampoo Recipe:

  • 1/2 cup castile soap (I buy organic by the gallon HERE)

  • 1/2 cup distilled or filtered water

  • 16 drops Rosemary essential oil (where to buy)

Mix thoroughly all ingredients together and pour into a recycled container, preferably glass since it is sustainable and earth friendly.

2. ROSEMARY ESSENTIAL PROPERTIES

It contains camphene, luteolin, and carnosol, which help to regulate blood sugar levels and promote heart health.

3. ROSEMARY MEDICINAL PROPERTIES

For thousands of years, rosemary has helped to relieve muscle pain, improve concentration and memory, boost our immune systems, and promote healthy hair growth (yay!). The rosemary herb also regulates blood sugar levels and promotes heart health.

4. Rosemary Magical Properties

For herbalists, gardeners, forest foragers and those known as a "kitchen witch" or plant witch, the knowledge of rosemary's magical properties is widely known.

This is an herb best used for remembering loved ones who have passed on. It's also a good one for fighting off evil spirits as well as an overall protection herb.

5. Rosemary Tea for Good Health

Here at the cottage, we have 11 rosemary bushes planted around the property. Not only do I use it in my cooking, incense, pest protection, and herbal medicine, but I make a teapot full of Rosemary Tea several days per week.

Rosemary Tea Recipe:

1 sprig of rosemary

1 teapot of boiling water

Bring a teapot of water to a boil and pour over the sprig of rosemary.

Here's to good health, good friends, and good rosemary tea! Share your photos and recipes with us by using #PlainsCottage.
