Going Camping? This Is the Gear You Need for Campfire Cooking

Here's the essential RV kitchen equipment to take with you camping.

Cooking at home in a large kitchen is one thing, but when you go RVing or camping outdoors, cooking becomes a whole other adventure.

Without your pantry of handy ingredients, arsenal of pots and pans, utensils, and luxurious home appliances, how are you supposed to cook in an RV you ask? Well I have good news for you: There's no need to throw in the towel and spend money at the outdoorsman store on freeze-dried meals (yuck!).

Fire Me Up

What will be your heat source for cooking at your RV campsite? A propane camp stove, a charcoal grill, a good old-fashioned campfire-or all three? Make sure you know before you go exactly what the fire pit/grill situation is at your campsite so you can plan meals and bring the right cooking gear.

Skillet Time

A pre-seasoned cast iron skillet will be your best friend in your RV kitchen. It's durable enough to go directly over the campfire and you can cook your favorite breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and desserts in it, like those found in my new mini cookbook, The RV Table.

Tongs Belong

Tongs are a heat-proof extension of your hands at the campfire when you are cooking. Also, they're good for all manner of grabbing, flipping, and lifting food, which I love.

Don't Foil Me

Every good RV cook knows the quickest and easiest cleanup cooking tool is heavy duty aluminum foil. You can literally wrap your camp food in it to cook directly in the coals. I've even turned foil into an instant lid for any pot, pan, or container.
