Dine Deliciously at Your Campsite Thanks to My Best RV Cooking Menu Planner

Updated: Apr 12, 2021

I don't know about you, but RV meal planning or even "at-home" meal planning is one of those things that I always have the best intentions of doing, and then the next thing you know it's the first to fall through the cracks.

When I do make a point to sit down and write out meals for the week, it makes grocery shopping and prepping dinner much easier—even when my days are full of to-do’s. So, I thought it would be fun if I gave you (and myself) a simple way to plan out your family’s food a week at a time.

Camping Menu Planner

Some quick meals that do not require refrigeration are good for planning your RV menu. Because RV refrigerators are so small typically, resorting to other meal ideas is a good idea.

Here are some of my go-to “no refrigerator needed” camping ingredients:

  • Oatmeal I love cinnamon spice, but whatever you wish here!

  • Canned tuna, chicken, or ham for an easy protein source

  • Beef or other jerkies and dehydrated meats

  • Energy protein, or granola bars

  • Pasta lentils, beans, and other dry, boilable grains and legumes

When planning out your camping menu, including the above grocery goods will do well to provide you a solid basis for your camping diet, you can get even more creative with your menu if you want to.

For instance, if you bring along some shelf stable breakfast go to’s like oatmeal or granola bars. These are great standbys when you don’t have time to cook an entire meal.

If you are not opposed to processed foods, you can also look into dry, packaged meals that require no refrigeration, such as toaster pastries, donuts and other goodies that come together in a pinch.

PROPANE CAMP STOVE

If you are going to do much cooking, I recommend getting a propane camp stove. One that is portable and lightweight is desirable for mobility reasons. Plus if you're like me, I do most of the cooking so I don't want a heavy camp stove!

My suggestion when planning your camping / RV menu is this: make sure you know before you go exactly what the fire pit/grill situation is at your campsite. Having all the answers will help you plan meals and bring the right cooking gear to the RV site.

Looking for easy recipes with only one pot to clean? Try some of my one pot meals here. Be sure you have the best iron skillet possible though. It makes all the difference!

I want to have as many healthy meals as possible when we are RVing, but we also want to be realistic. Sometimes limited space and tools are going to dictate what you cook!

Check out my quick and easy recipes in my new cookbook, The RV Table.

NO COOKING REQUIRED

Not a fan of cooking? No problem!

You can find tons of relatively healthy, well-constructed packaged meals that require you only to add water or pop them in the microwave. Not only are they convenient, but they can also be surprisingly delicious!

Here's some quick and easy "throw together" no cook meal ideas. These RV no-cook meals will serve up fresh, hearty dinners that need no grill, oven, or stove.

  • Chips & Salsa - I like to call it "Camping Caviar". I know you think it couldn't be a meal, but it can! Add in some precooked meat, fresh veggies, and chips. Voila! You have a healthy meal.

  • Wraps - Buy your favorite deli meat before you go RVing and serve up a delicious no-cook meal at your campsite.

  • PB & J - This is an oldie but goodie standby, seriously who can say no to a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?

Whatever recipe you decide to cook around the fire, remember the most important part of a camping trip is spending time together.
